Trails and Hikes

Yarmouth

Beaches: Dogs are not allowed on Yarmouth beaches but are allowed in conservation areas any time of the year.

Callery - Darling Conservation Area: 2.4 miles of trails in vegetated wetland, upland woods and a boardwalk over a salt marsh.
Directions: Trail entrance on Center St. at Alms House Rd., near Grays Beach. The parking lot is at the end of Center St., on Homer's Dock Rd. and at the end of Kingsbury Way off Route 6A.

Dennis Pond Conservation Area: 1/2 mile on the main trail in wooded upland bordering a pond.
Directions: Trail entrance is on Willow St. and on Summer St. at Dennis Pond.

Horse Pond Conservation Area: 3/4 mile main trail with several side trails through upland woods, vegetated wetlands and along the edge of a pond.
Directions: Trail entrance on is on the east side of Higgins Crowell Rd. 0.5 miles north of Buck Island Rd.

Raymond J. Syrjala Conservation Area: 3/4 mile loop in wetlands and upland woods.
Directions: Trail entrance is on Winslow Gray Rd. 0.5 miles north of Route 28.

Sandy Pond Recreation Area: 1/2 mile trail around a kettle pond; trail includes several exercise stations.
Directions: The entrance to the recreation area is north of Buck Island Rd. 0.2 miles west of Higgins Crowell Rd.

Historical Society of Old Yarmouth Nature Trail: 1.5 miles of trails in 50 acres of upland woods, pond, and wetland; flowering shrubs in the spring.
Directions: Trail entrance is off Route 6A behind the Yarmouthport Post Office. A trail guide is available at the Gate House at the head of the trail.

Dennis

The Town of Dennis has a pooper scooper bylaw requiring dog owners to dispose of waste properly. Dogs must be leashed or under strict verbal control of a responsible person.

Beaches: Dogs are not allowed on beaches from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Fresh Pond Dog Park: Two fenced enclosures, fresh water swimming area for dogs, walking trail through woods.
Directions: Rte. 134 South between traffic lights at Upper County Rd. and traffic lights at Rte. 28.

Chapin Beach conservation area: Chapin public beach prohibits dogs in the summer, but dog owners may follow the 4-wheel drive tracks to the left of the public beach and walk the conservation area of the beach and sand flats year round. Beach parking sticker is required during summer beach hours.
Directions: Rte. 6A Dennis to New Boston Rd. (stay to the left of the playground), right onto Beach St., left onto Black Flats Rd, left onto Dr. Bolter Rd.

Crowe's Pasture conservation area: Dirt roads, scrub oak woods, meadows and marsh, with the beach at the end of the mile long road; watch for occasional approaching 4 wheel drive vehicles. The dirt road is deeply rutted and rough for passenger cars, park at the beginning of the road near the cemetery.
Directions: Rte. 6A East Dennis to School St., (across from Airline Rd. just before the Brewster town line) first right onto South St., straight through stop sign, cemetery is on right.

Indian Lands conservation area: Dirt power lines road and wooded path beside Bass River for great views of river and marsh. Stay on marked paths, private land to the left of the power lines.
Directions: 485 Main St. South Dennis, next to Dennis Town Hall. Park at the far right end of the parking lot, next to the cemetery.

Barnstable

The town and villages of Barnstable has a Pooper Scooper bylaw requiring dog owners to dispose of waste properly. Dogs must be leashed or under strict verbal control of a responsible person.

Beaches: The town allows pets on the beaches from September 15 to May 15.

Bridge Creek Conservation Area
Directions: To reach Bridge Creek watershed park at either the West Barnstable fire station on Route149 or at Church Street (off Parker Road on Route 6A). This large 246-acre conservation area has 2.5 miles of well-cleared trails and maps at the trailhead.

Crocker Neck Conservation Area
Directions: The 52-acre Crocker Neck in Cotuit is a wooded penninsula with an interpretive trail and observation deck overlooking tidal pools. The area also has saltwater marshes. Park in lot off Santuit Road.

Long Pond Conservation Area
Directions: A community garden with two observation decks overlooking the 37-acre Long Pond area ijn Marstons Mills features an interpretive network of trails totaling two miles that passes through fields and woodlands. Parking entrance off Santuit-Newtown Road is about 2.5 miles from Route 28.

Old Jail Lane Conservation Area
Directions: Parking is located directly off Old Jail Lane in Barnstable. Take Phinneys Lane from the 132 intersection and travel approximately 1 mile. Just beyond the Route 6 overpass, Old Jail Lane angles off sharply to your left. The lot is a 1/2 mile down on the left. Watch for the sign, as you can easily drive past it..

Otis Atwood Conservation Area
Directions: Take Route 6 to Exit 5 and head south on Route 149. Where it forks to the right, take Osterville-West Barnstable Rd. to the left until you see a narrow dirt pull-off on your right.

Sandy Neck
Directions: The Sandy Neck Recreation Area off Route 6A in West Barnstable, has about 5 miles of sandy trails bordered by wildflowers and cranberries. You can plan your hike from a trail map at the beach guard station. Parking is available.

West Barnstable Conservation Area
Directions: The West Barnstable Conservation Area on Route 149 is an extensive 1,114-acre area with 15 miles of trails. A good number of the trails are geared toward mountain biking. You'll find limited parking at the intersection of Popple Bottom Road and Route 149, or off the service road.

Harwich

The Town of Harwich has a pooper scooper bylaw requiring dog owners to dispose of waste properly. Dogs must be leashed or under strict verbal control of a responsible person.

Harwich Public Beaches: Dogs are not allowed on Harwich beaches from May 15 through September 30, but are welcome in conservation areas any time of year.

Bells Neck Road Conservation Area: 1 to 2 miles of trails and dirt roads in oak and pine woods bordering a marsh and the Herring River.
Directions: Trail entrances are on Bells Neck Road ½ mile north of route 28 and at the end of North Road in West Harwich.

Hawksnest Park: A large network of trails and dirt roads in an undeveloped state park and town conservation lands with oak and pine woods, wetlands, and several kettle ponds.
Directions: The entrances are south of Spruce Road, ½to ¾ mile west of Route 137 just south of Route 6.

Thompson's Field: Dirt roads and trails in a large open field with pine/oak woods in town conservation land.
Directions: The entrance is on the north side of Chatham Road.
